November in Books

December 6, 2015 Laura Norsen

I did a lot of reading this month! Between travel, power outages, and rainy weekends keeping me indoors, I've had lots of time for it. Most of what I read this month was very good, so it was a little hard to choose a favorite. Other than my one disappointment, I would highly recommend reading any of these books!

Best surprise: The Nightengale by Kristin Hannah
This book is exactly the type I love most - heartbreaking and surprising and beautifully written. The story follows two estranged sisters struggling to survive in Nazi occupied France. While it's fiction, the characters and situations are all so well thought out and believable that it feels real. The hardships and tragedies they struggle with over the course of the war are all certainly situations women found themselves in. This book had me crying a few times. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone!

Biggest disappointment: Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch
Like last month, this was a book I'd looked forward to reading for a long time. The first few chapters were enjoyable; they read a like a more fantastical Dickens. Then the main character went to sea, and it turned in to the same thing for hundreds of pages. It took me almost two months to finish it, and it's not a long book. I even considered not finishing this one, which is something I almost never do.

Also read:
The Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuin
The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson
Girl at War by Sara Nović
Station Eleven by Hilary St John Mantel

October in Books

Books! I love reading them, and I love hearing about what other people are reading. I already keep track of the books I read on goodreads, but since I enjoy seeing what other bloggers read so much, I thought I'd share what I've been reading here. I'd love to hear what you've been reading too!

Best surprise:
So You've Been Publicly Shamed by Jon Ronson
This was the October book for my book club. I read it almost entirely on the flight to LA, and found it very clever and interesting. It felt a lot like a story from This American Life in book form, which makes sense, since the author has contributed to the show. We had lots to discuss with this one. If you have a book club, I'd highly recommend reading it!

Biggest disappointment:
Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami
I'd been wanting to read this one since it was published, so I was disappointed to find the main character extremely unlikeable. Still, like every other Haruki Murakami book I've read, his writing had a surreal quality that kept me interested enough to finish the book. I definitely didn't hate it, but considering how much I've loved his other books, this was a let down.

Also read:
Things We Set On Fire by Deborah Reed

Currently reading:
Jamrach's Menagerie by Carol Birch
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Hi there! I'm Laura, and I'm an alpine addict. When I'm not out on the trail, I'm most likely at home snuggled up with my cat and a good book.

Even the avalanche lilies can't help staring at lovely Lady Tahoma!
Think cold thoughts... 🌨️🌬️❄️ 108° outside and 91° inside my house has me dreaming of foggy alpine lakes, icy glacial waterfalls, and snowy lowland paths. #melting #pnw #summer #sheexplores #washington #vscocam
Perks of volunteering with @washingtontrails - sometimes you get a view like this just above where you parked your car. Plus there are candy breaks! #nationaltrailsday
Weeding isn't so bad with such good company! Moments later, this little guy paused to rest on my hand. #inmygarden #pnw #pnwlife
Quintessential Puget Sound view 😍
This place is always lovely, but this time of year is when it truly shines. I feel like I say this about every season, but spring is my favorite!
I accidentally wrote a poem on today's #alpinetrailsbookclub hike. Trees, moss stumps, ferns, rocks, muck, and rain, rain, rain.

It was a soggy one, but lovely nonetheless.
Trees festooned in green, even in the dead of winter. 💚
The spooky vibe of the trails around the summit of Squak Mountain speaks to the dark & spooky part of my soul. 🖤 Also, this short (cold, rainy, super hygge) hike with a wonderful friend was exactly what I needed to kick myself out of my 2020 glo
I wonder - are they called licorice ferns because they taste of licorice? Important questions.
