Life: Week 2

After falling into a working-from-home slump late last year, and hardly ever managing to get myself out of the apartment during the week, I’m aiming for more weekday walks in 2019. This week, I managed not one but two - a significant improvement considering I managed only one in the entire month of December! We’ve had sunny skies and bizarrely warm temperatures lately, with only the bare branches to confirm it is in fact still winter. Andy is still ridiculously busy at work and wound up working both Saturday and Sunday. While I’d considered a solo Saturday hike, I wound up sleeping in, then spending the afternoon baking and cooking in preparation for my upcoming long weekend at the cabin for the January Alpine Trails Book Club. Sadly I’m sure there will be another full weekend of work for him in the future, so next time I’ll just have to rope a friend into an adventure so I have someone to hold me accountable for getting out of the apartment!

Life: Week 2

After a quiet, rainy work week, our annual mid-winter spring preview arrived just in time for the weekend! Perfect timing too, since I signed  up for my first winter work party with the Washington Trails Association on Saturday. It was a good thing we lucked into dry weather, because our work site conditions were anything but. Our task for the day was building several puncheon structures (those boardwalks you see on particularly muddy stretches of trail) through a literal mud pit. As usual, it was enormously rewarding and so much fun! After working so hard on Saturday, I spent Sunday relaxing and catching up with one of my oldest friends at her new lakefront cabin home out in the country. With such an unseasonably lovely day, we decided to row around the lake to soak up the sunshine before returning to her patio for a lunch cooked over a fire. It was the perfect break from the doom and gloom of winter, the memory of which may have to last the next several months until the sun returns to stay!

Life: Week 2

It was another cold week around here, in more than one way. Temperatures continued to be mostly below freezing, and late in the week Andy came down with a bad cold. Thankfully he's recovered now, but it meant that we spent the week close to home. With all that time at home, I've been making good progress on the sleeves of my sweater - they're already half finished! I've known about the idea of working a pair of knits at the same time, but mostly read about it for socks or mittens. To save time, I decided to try knitting both sleeves at once. So far it's working out well, and it definitely seems to be speeding things up. I wish I'd spent more time outdoors over the week, but there are only so many hours in the day With these short winter days, it's more challenging than usual to find the time. The days are getting longer though - soon there will be plenty of time for walks after work!

Life Week 2

I've been fighting my annual post-holiday doldrums. This past week, that involved meeting a friend for delicious ramen and good conversation on a rainy night, admiring the spectacular sunsets that come with occasional sunny days, and finally visiting a local yarn store I've meant to check out for months! While there, I picked up yarn to make this sweater for Andy. That should keep me busy for several months!

Sadly it did not involve taking many pictures or nearly enough time outdoors. Goals for the weeks to come!

Hi there! I'm Laura, and I'm an alpine addict. When I'm not out on the trail, I'm most likely at home snuggled up with my cat and a good book.

Even the avalanche lilies can't help staring at lovely Lady Tahoma!
Think cold thoughts... 🌨️🌬️❄️ 108° outside and 91° inside my house has me dreaming of foggy alpine lakes, icy glacial waterfalls, and snowy lowland paths. #melting #pnw #summer #sheexplores #washington #vscocam
Perks of volunteering with @washingtontrails - sometimes you get a view like this just above where you parked your car. Plus there are candy breaks! #nationaltrailsday
Weeding isn't so bad with such good company! Moments later, this little guy paused to rest on my hand. #inmygarden #pnw #pnwlife
Quintessential Puget Sound view 😍
This place is always lovely, but this time of year is when it truly shines. I feel like I say this about every season, but spring is my favorite!
I accidentally wrote a poem on today's #alpinetrailsbookclub hike. Trees, moss stumps, ferns, rocks, muck, and rain, rain, rain.

It was a soggy one, but lovely nonetheless.
Trees festooned in green, even in the dead of winter. 💚
The spooky vibe of the trails around the summit of Squak Mountain speaks to the dark & spooky part of my soul. 🖤 Also, this short (cold, rainy, super hygge) hike with a wonderful friend was exactly what I needed to kick myself out of my 2020 glo
I wonder - are they called licorice ferns because they taste of licorice? Important questions.
