Life: Week 30

Among the many things I’ve missed during this pandemic, trails are top of the list. While there hasn't really been any point over all the various closures and stay-home orders that I haven’t had at least some option for hiking, I just haven't felt comfortable with the risk of being around the large numbers of other people likely to be out on my favorite trails. Thankfully, as time as passed and we've learned more about how Covid-19 is and isn't spread, the growing consensus seems to be that the risk of spreading the virus is reduced outdoors. Armed with that knowledge - and not one but two options for face coverings! - I finally felt comfortable joining a small group of my Alpine Trails Book Club friends for an absolutely glorious hike. We met up at Ebey's Landing, a trail I've hiked many times. After so much time away, it felt like I was seeing the trail with new eyes and the combination of sun, ocean breezes, flowers, and the company of some of my favorite people was just what I needed.

Life: Week 30

We've reached the depths of summer - days when it's too hot for much beyond hiding in the shade with a cold beer. I'm just not built for long periods of hot weather, and when the temperature climbs over 80Β° for too long, my brain starts to turn to mush. By the weekend, I was desperate to escape our stuffy apartment so after work on Friday, Andy and I fled to Whidbey Island. Thankfully we found the cabin breezy and significantly cooler than our apartment, leaving me with the energy for several long rambles along the beach and through the neighborhood near the cabin. On the beach there were pretty shells tiny crustaceans to poke at, and up above the bluff, the road was lined with blackberries ripe for snacking. After a Saturday lunch in Langley and a stop at my favorite bookstore (where I picked up this gem), Andy and I spent the afternoon drinking wine and reading in the dappled sun on the deck. While an escape for the weekend made a nice break, I keep dreaming of having the time to spend a whole week on Whidbey, to really let the peace of the island soak in - and maybe even finish reading a book or two!

Life: Week 30

Work is still quiet, but since the busy fall season is fast approaching, I'm trying to get out for afternoon walks as often as possible. Luckily, the blackberries are finally ripe, so I have delicious trail snacks to keep me motivated! We had a few birthdays to celebrate, so we stuck close to home for the weekend. For the first time this summer, we were actually around on a Saturday morning, which meant a trip to the Redmond Farmer's Market. Since we had guests Saturday night, I picked up peaches for pie in addition to a lovely armload of summer market flowers. While I find it hard to resist the temptation to pack every summer weekend with hikes and camping, the quiet weekend made for a nice break.

Life: Week 30

As summer flies by, I'm beginning to notice the sun setting earlier each day, the days growing shorter as fall nears. I'll miss the long, luxurious summer days when they're gone, but it's hard to be sad about the swift approach of fall. For now, I'll be making the most of what's left of summer, spending as much time outdoors as possible. This past week, that included an backpacking trip to Lost Lake outside Greenwater. I have to be specific because there are at least 10 lakes with that name in Washington! This particular Lost Lake was peaceful, relatively uncrowded, and thankfully mosquito free. Nearly all the campsites at the lake were occupied by dusk, but we arrived early in the afternoon, and managed to snag the perfect site, well away from anyone else. We spent the evening reading and watching the resident geese paddle around the lake. This hike had been Andy's choice, and while I would have chosen a destination with more dramatic views or photogenic lakes, I was quite pleasantly surprised by the hike along Greenwater River and up through the forest. On our hike back out, we even saw a river otter napping on a log on nearby Quinn Lake!

Hi there! I'm Laura, and I'm an alpine addict. When I'm not out on the trail, I'm most likely at home snuggled up with my cat and a good book.

This place is always lovely, but this time of year is when it truly shines. I feel like I say this about every season, but spring is my favorite!
I accidentally wrote a poem on today's #alpinetrailsbookclub hike. Trees, moss stumps, ferns, rocks, muck, and rain, rain, rain.

It was a soggy one, but lovely nonetheless.

I wonder - are they called licorice ferns because they taste of licorice? Important questions.
