Summer has arrived, and with it the long days of sunshine and hot weather. Halfway through June and already there have been an intolerable number of sweaty, restless nights where the temperature in our apartment doesn't seem to drop below 75. There are many things I love about summer, but I could do without the heat! With a vacation to get ready for, Andy and I spent our weekend close to home, although we did make time for another day trip to Whidbey Island to pick up more of our favorite coffee from Useless Bay in Langley. It wasn't until we were on our way home that we realized while we'd eaten lunch on their patio, we'd completely forgotten to pick up more coffee! Of course that just means that we'll need to make another trip to Whidbey. How unfortunate...Read More
I'm happy to report that fall has most definitely arrived! While we had one suspiciously summery day this week, I think (hope!) we've left our days of 80+ temperatures behind for the year. The trees in our apartment complex are some of the first to turn a vibrant gold and lose their leaves every fall and I've started to see them as an indicator that fall has arrived. Soon they'll be bare, but for these few weeks, on sunny afternoons their color reminds me a little of my beloved alpine larches.Read More
If April shower bring May flowers, May showers bring only loud complaints. Especially if it should dare to rain on the weekend! Meanwhile, I'm still loving this stormy spring. Maybe it's because I'm still so busy with work that I hardly have time to get outdoors, but I can't get enough of the rain drenched views out my window. All this rain just makes the few days (or hours) of sunshine all the more enjoyable. Between the many showers this week, we did have a few brief bursts of sun at times that I was able to make it outdoors. All the rain has certainly made for a green and flower-filled May. Maybe it's the grey skies, but blooms seem more vibrant than usual this year.Read More
I'm still in shock over the results of the election yesterday, but I can talk about that later. For now, I'd like to share the wonderful week I just spent with my family and try to focus on how lucky I am to have so many positive things in my life.Read More
This week was rough. After our lovely, relaxing week off, this week started with a stressful trip to the emergency vet. Our cat is back to his usual cuddly self now, but the ordeal was exhausting for all of us and it took most of the week to recover. Thankfully we had a quiet weekend of relaxing at home. We went on a few short walks around the neighborhood, but for the most part we were total and unabashed homebodies.
Every time we did manage to step outside, I was happy to see signs of fall everywhere. Since moving to Washington as a child, I remember the sight of spiders perched on their webs decorating the woods around my parents house throughout September. Apples have started to spring up all over and bright yellow leaves have been tumbling from the trees outside my apartment all week. I always love seeing the piles of leaves littering the walkway at our apartment, and can't help but feel sad when the groundskeeping crew come to blow them away. For now, though, my favorite season is just beginning, and even when these early leaves are gone, there will be plenty more to turn vibrant colors and fall through November.Read More
