After what was starting to seem like an endless winter, the heavy snowfall in Seattle that’s lasted nearly two weeks turned into slush and then rain by Tuesday. Unfortunately, now that snow just won’t go away. Even worse, early Tuesday morning, we lost power, as the weight of snow began to cause trees to start shedding limbs as if they were dropping leaves. After work - what little work I was able to do with no electricity and no internet that is - I spent a few hours knitting by candlelight until Andy got home and we decided to venture out into town for a hot dinner and some outlets to recharge our phones. Wednesday morning, with the power still out, I packed up my laptop and ventured out onto the sludgy sidewalks to work find a coffee shop with free wifi where I’d be able to work more effectively. After being cooped up in the apartment for so long, it was refreshing to work outside my home, especially with an almond milk latte and gruyere & thyme croissant for breakfast!

Cider pressing with Andy’s family at their property on Vashon Island is my absolute favorite fall tradition. While it’s only a short ferry ride from Seattle, Vashon feels like a peaceful and remote retreat, far from the noise and bright lights of the city. After talking about it for years, this year Andy and I finally managed to spend the weekend in the Birdhouse - a tiny off-the-grid cabin nestled amid the old-growth maples. We got a late start Saturday morning, but still arrived on Vashon with plenty of time to wander around town, exploring main street and stocking up on pastries, tea, coffee, and cider. After all our drinking and window shopping, we loaded all our goodies into our packs for the short hike down to our home for the night. It was surprisingly cold in the Birdhouse, but our toasty sleeping bags kept us plenty warm!

Andy and I started the week off with matching colds, but thankfully by the weekend we were both feeling better! The highlight of the week was our annual trip to Vashon Island to make cider with Andy's family on Saturday. It's a tough choice, but I think our fall trip to Vashon is my favorite fall tradition! This year, we brought my friend Ashley and her daughter with us. Andy and I have been to Vashon so many times that we take the beauty of the property for granted, so bringing a friend for the first time allowed us to see the place through new eyes. Because of the dry summer we had, it wasn't a great year for apples, so we had much less cider than usual, but the small amount we got was delicious as usual. Like always, we found ourselves hesitant to head home at the end of the day, but eventually we headed for the ferry home.

I'm still in shock over the results of the election yesterday, but I can talk about that later. For now, I'd like to share the wonderful week I just spent with my family and try to focus on how lucky I am to have so many positive things in my life.

Sunshine, glorious sunshine - a whole week of it! I remember writing a few weeks ago about my excitement over working with the windows open. This week, keeping the windows open at work became a necessity! Most afternoons, we even had to close the windows and switch on the air conditioning. It's been like a little taste of summer in Seattle!
